Making a splash
Grand opening in Lauriun Monday
LAURIUM — The village of Laurium announced the grand opening celebration of its Laurium Splash Pad, a new, universally designed community space created for families and residents to enjoy throughout the summer season, according to a release. The event is free and open to the public.
Community members are invited to kick off the start of summer on Monday, June 8 at 1:00 p.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening celebration. Attendees will have the opportunity to be among the first to experience the splash pad, with free ice cream treats available for families during the event.
The pad was designed to be an all-inclusive recreational space, featuring low-flow water elements such as spray jets and nozzles to provide enjoyment, while promoting water efficiency. It includes a zero-depth entry and accessibility
features to accommodate individuals with varying degrees of mobility and sensory perception, ensuring that everyone in the community can participate.
Village Manager Ian Lewis said the project reflects the village’s commitment to creating spaces for bringing people together and enhancing the quality of life in Laurium. “The splash pad is more than just a place to cool off,” he said. “It’s a gathering space designed for inclusivity, activity, and community connection. We’re proud to offer something that families and residents of all abilities can enjoy.”
The pad has been in development for more than a year. In March, 2025, the village received a $45,000 donation from the Keweenaw Health Foundation to assist in funding the splash pad. In May 2025, Laurium partnered with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to complete its final aspects.
In January, the village was awarded a $20,000 grant from Copper Shores Community Health Foundation through the its Wellness and Outdoor Recreation Fund as part of the village’s Get Active Initiative.
Located within a broader recreation area, the splash pad is part of an expanding outdoor community recreational space that also includes The George Gipp ice arena, picnic areas, and accessible parking. The design encourages residents
of all ages to stay active, connect with others, and enjoy the outdoors in a safe and welcoming environment.
