Downtown flooding closes L'Anse beach

Photo from Facebook Rains led to flooding in downtown L'Anse as seen in this photo taken Wednesday on the 100 block of East Broad Street.

L’ANSE — Flooding in downtown L’Anse Wednesday afternoon prompted multiple responses from village officials. L’Anse put out a notice at 4 p.m. on Facebook Wednesday warning people to stay away from Linden Creek, an hour later it announced the closure of the waterfront and beach.

Village Manager Bob LaFave said L’Anse is currently working on clean-up after the rain event. Water levels have receded since Wednesday evening.

“We are currently working on restoration efforts,” he said. “On River Street, there was a large storm water overflow there. We had some sewer overflow as well.”

According to media reporting, L’Anse had 3.25 inches of rainfall in four hours. According to LaFave, five inches of rain was recorded uphill near Dynamite Hill, which then flowed down to the village.

LaFave said there were no injuries as of Thursday. Railroad tracks sustained damage and will be worked on in the next coming days.

According to LaFave, there was sewer overflow into Lake Superior.

“We did have some sewer overflows, though, so there was some sewer that did get into Lake Superior,” he said. “It was unfortunate.”

The L’Anse Waterfront Concert was moved to Thursday evening. “The show will go on. LaFave said. “We’re just asking people to stay away from the beach and the water.”

Starting at $4.00/week.
