HOUGHTON -- A 40-year old Houghton County man was sentenced to one year of probation in 12th Circuit Court Wednesday for assaulting a police officer in April. He pleaded no contest to the charge.
According to Judge Brittany Bulleit, William Belanger was under the influence while experiencing a mental health crisis. Police were called and attempted to intervene when Belanger fought arrest.
Bulleit noted Belanger's positives, including his use of supportive resources. She said his substance abuse and mental health struggles have been long-term issues.
"You have to figure out a path that involves the use of your support," she said.
Belanger's attorney, David Gemignani said the mixing of alcohol and mental health issues caused the situation to get out of hand.
"To me, it was a cry for help," he said. "The recommendation is for him to be released today, I support that ... I support him to be restored to his liberty."
Bulleit said despite the incident, Belanger seemed to show remorse and has a game-plan to recover from his addiction and treat his mental health issues. Before the sentence was handed down, Belanger said he wants to stay in the area long-term because of the familiarity with its resources.
"If someone in a good position gives me advice, I should just follow it," he said. "I'm just really going to be relying on my resources."
Belanger's probation will begin immediately following release and will last one year. Its stipulations include sobriety from all substances and the inability to leave the state.
