Brayden McMillan sentenced
Could serve up to five years

HOUGHTON -- A 24-year old Houghton County man was sentenced up to five years in prison in 12th Circuit Court Wednesday for concealing a weapon in his vehicle. Brayden McMillan was arrested by Laurium Village Police in May and pleaded guilty to the charge.
According to Judge Brittany Bulleit, the weapon was loaded at the time of the arrest and she had to "consider public safety" when she sentencing McMillan. This is McMillan's second offense. He was sentenced to five months in jail in 2020 for breaking and entering.
McMillan's attorney, Cameron Herrington, said his client has been addicted to substances from a young age and asked the court to impose the minimum sentence while strongly urging additional help for him.
"Mr. McMillan has made bad choices," he said. "He has done treatment a number of times and it hasn't worked. He needs more -- I think a Boot Camp is a good opportunity."
Bulleit said she will allow Boot Camp only if McMillan behaves well in prison and serves an appropriate amount of time.
"You have taken a prior number of treatment programs, and that's good Mr. McMillan, but it appears they are not enough and you do need something more," she said. "Or you need to take in the lessons from those treatment programs and use them out in the world."
McMillan was found in contempt of court at Wednesday’s sentencing for prescribed medication to another inmate while in jail. He will serve a minimum of 14 months in prison and be credited for 48 days as time served.
"I've made bad choices, but I'm not a bad person," McMillan said.
McMillan has six months to appeal the decision.
