Campground on Isle Royale temporarily closed

HOUGHTON – Due to increased human-wildlife interactions and food storage concerns, Duncan Narrows campground will be closed starting July 6, 2026 at 10 a.m., the Isle Royale National Park announced on Wednesday. The campground will re-open on July 8, at 3 p.m. The closure will be strictly signed and monitored by park officials.

In response to wolves accessing human food and garbage in and around Rock Harbor and campgrounds located on the east end of the island, new food storage guidelines to ensure the safety of visitors and wildlife are in effect, the Isle Royale NPS website says.

This closure is necessary to maintain public health and safety. The closed area will be signed and monitored to ensure compliance. The NPS posted the alert on its Facebook post.

The campground is located in the narrows of Duncan Bay, on the northeast end of Isle Royale. Popular is accessible on by water, via private boat, kayak, or canoe. It features a small number of primitive tent sites and three-sided wooden shelters. Hipcamp.com reports because of its location where Duncan Bay enters the open waters of Lake Superior, it serves a popular sheltered stopover.
