ALLOUEZ TOWNSHIP -- Four popular roadside parks on M-26 or U.S. 41 in Keweenaw County will be temporarily closed for upgrades according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. In a press release issued Tuesday, MDOT Superior Region Media Representative Dan Weingarten said the parks will be closing for restroom facility improvements and will not be available for use. "The old toilet buildings are going to be removed and replaced," he said. "I've been told that these are going to be upgraded vault toilet facilities."
The following parks in Keweenaw County will be closed beginning Monday and will remain closed thru Aug. 20:
• Snow Gauge Roadside Park on U.S. 41
• Great Sand Bay Roadside Park on M-26
• Esry Roadside Park on M-26
• Hebard Roadside Park on M-26
Weingarten said these improvements are routine and now is the right time for them to be worked on. "These are older facilities that are in-line to be upgraded," he said. "We have the funds to do some of them. We try to do them in an ongoing fashion so that the older buildings can get refreshed and all the facilities can be kept up to date that way."
Weingarten said some parks may be reopened before Aug. 20 if weather conditions are favorable. In the meantime, his advice was for motorists and those visiting the Keweenaw Peninsula to be patient while road crews work. "We know these are popular facilities and ask for people's patience while we perform the necessary work and get them back online as soon as we can," he said.
