Digital Bloom coming

HOUGHTON — The City of Houghton invites artists and musicians to make their way downtown Aug. 1 to celebrate creativity and community. Digital Bloom, advertised as a non-AI, digital art festival, aims to support local artists. Its lineup was revealed Thursday and includes many local artists and musical acts.

Houghton Community and Business Development Manager Danielle Perkowitz said Digital Bloom will be a great opportunity for people to support their community’s artists and creators. “It’s just like a really incredible and important way for us to come together as a community and experience these things,” she said. “While also supporting our local artists.”

One artist will take up space behind the Portage Lake District Library and paint a mural. According to Perkowitz, local artist Rebecca Paavo will spend the entirety of the festival live-painting the mural. “It’s going to be a mural and butterfly-scape that will go on the corner of the building,” she said. “All day long during the event you can watch her on the pier painting that mural in real-time.”

Other artists on the pier will include Molly Wallen, who will be painting life-size native birds. Alakotila, Lahja, Nikki Madisen and Ian Raymond will also be on the pier making and presenting art for the community to enjoy.

The Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw will host artists Ella Shaw and Sol Anzorena. Shaw will display a virtual reality exhibit which will dive into personal growth, land regeneration and how it all fits into the digital realm. Perkowitz said Shaw’s exhibit is exactly what Digital Bloom is all about.

“That [exhibit] is sort of a journey that you take with virtual reality and there will be perhaps different things that you can choose,” she said.

Perkowitz said Fresh Coast Yoga will also pitch in for the event. It will bring yoga and art together for an immersive yoga experience. Sound design will pair with a restorative yoga class.

The entirety of Downtown Houghton will be bustling with digital and handmade art, as well interactive experiences from the likes of Fresh Coat Yoga, the Carnegie Museum and the Prickly Porcupine Café.

Musical performances will take place at the Carnegie Museum and on the Houghton Waterfront Pier. Bands performing include: Brookie, Bees X6, Qualms, Arika Rose, Musical Zen and Daryl Reece.

Digital Bloom will kick off at 2 p.m., August 1 in Downtown Houghton. More information and the full artist lineup can be found on the City of Houghton’s Facebook page.

Starting at $4.00/week.
