Repairs on Sturgeon River Bridge

CHASSELL -- The Sturgeon River bridge on U.S. 41 south of Chassell will undergo repairs starting Aug. 3 running thru Oct. 23, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced Thursday.

Superior Region Media Representative Dan Weingarten said the repairs are routine and will extend the bridge's lifespan. It has been operational since the 1960s.

"This was planned, preventative maintenance work to lengthen the service life," Weingarten said. "It's currently in fair condition."

According to a press release, MDOT will invest $536,000 for the maintenance work project. Which will include expansion joint replacement, deck, substructure and railing patching and crack sealing. The project will support five jobs through contracting work and through MDOT.

Weingarten said temporary traffic signals will regulate one-lane traffic across the bridge during repairs.

"They'll be set in-place on the roadway and treat them just like you would any other traffic signal," he said.
