KEWEENAW COUNTY – On the morning of July 14, 2026, Isle Royale National Park staff confirmed a small fire burning in Tobin Harbor on Red Rock Point, according to a statement from Isle Royal National Park. NPS is calling it the Red Rocks Fire.
Due to the fire, Merritt Lane Campground, including the tent site, shelter, and dock, are closed, the NPS says. Merritt Lane Campground is also closed to day use. Merritt Lane Campground is located in Merritt Lane on the northeast end of Isle Royale National Park. Boats can stay overnight at the dock.
Isle Royale National Park, in a social media post, says staff are monitoring the site. Because of wind and the potential direction of spread, Merritt Lane Campground, Merritt Lane Dock, and off-trail camping zone 9 are closed until further notice.
According to the post, the closure remains in effect until further notice and is necessary to ensure visitor health and safety. Closed areas will be patrolled to ensure compliance. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Staff are monitoring the site. Updates will be provided as they become available.
