Laurium seeks proposals
Looking to upgrade Village Hall
Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette The ballroom on the second floor of the Laurium Village Hall has received much attention recently, including cleaning, painting and refinishing the hardwood floor.
LAURIUM – The village council is seeking proposals from licensed electricians and electrical companies to upgrade and/or replace the current wiring at the Laurium Village Hall. The intent is to review, upgrade and replace outdated systems throughout the building, including the administrative offices, the police station, and the ballroom on the second floor.
“We’re not seeking bids based on the scale of work,” Village Manager Ian Lewis said. “We don’t even know what the scope of work details, it’s such and old building.”
Lewis said there have been numerous wiring projects to the building over the years, causing safety and fire concerns. The intent is to have the wiring throughout the building inspected and evaluated to determine wiring that needs to be replaced and upgraded and what wiring is currently up to code and to acquire bids for work. The bid proposals will assist the village in deciding how to proceed.
“If the project will be more than $250,000, we’ll have to go get bids,” said Lewis. “If it’s below that threshold, we can use those estimates and quotes from the companies thatare willing to provide them to us.”
The unknown condition of the wiring in the ballroom is concern, the village wants to increase the community’s use of the facility. Lewis said the village has been renting the facility to groups.
In addition to addressing the wiring, Lewis said another issue to investigate is making the ballroom compliant with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).
“We’re looking at getting quotes for a stair lift,” he said. “We’re not going to do an elevator, that’s way outside what we can afford.”
Village Council Trustee said Village President John Sullivan led the project to update the ballroom, which includes thoroughly cleaning the second floor rooms. sanding and refinishing the hardwood floor, along with extensive painting.
Lewis said the coat closet has been cleaned and repainted and the adjacent restroom has also received cleaning and repairs.
