MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP -- The Marquette Township Board Wednesday voted to designate the Westwood Mall as a blighted property. The mall experienced a partial roof cave-in in late February due to snow accumulation.

By designating the property as blighted, the board has opened up the property to development through a brownfield redevelopment financing project.

According to the redevelopment project, which the board also approved on Wednesday, the mall, located at 3020 US 41 West, could be demolished by the end of the year. The plan is to demolish a portion of the former structure in order to build a front-facing commercial/retail space, leaving some vacant land available for future redevelopment.

Dunham’s, Kohl’s and North Iron Church will remain. That project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2027.
