HOUGHTON -- The Michigan Public Service Commission will make its way up to Michigan Technological University to hold a regular meeting at 11 a.m., Oct. 15 in the MUB Ballroom. The commission aims to give U.P. residents a chance to voice their concerns over the region's energy needs -- one of many opportunities community members have next month.
"Holding a Commission meeting in the UP gives Yoopers a chance to share their thoughts and concerns directly with the MPSC, and we're excited to hear from you," MPSC Chair Dan Scripps said in a press release Thursday. "We also look forward to discussions with community groups and leaders from across the UP on Michigan's energy future and the UP's unique energy needs."
Michigan Tech is also hosting Scripps and Commissioners Katherine Peretick and Shaquila Myers to speak at the North American Power Symposium (NAPS), Oct. 11-13. The event will bring together interested students, faculty and industry researchers in power engineering. Scripps will be on a panel at the symposium.
Electrical Engineering Professor and General Chair on the NAPS Organizational Committee Chee-Wooi Ten said this is the first time Michigan Tech has hosted NAPS since 1985. "It [NAPS] has been gradually increasing its popularity and that momentum continues to this day for its 58th year," he said.
According to Ten, panels at the symposium will deal with AI data centers, cybersecurity in power grids and the electrification of transportation.
On Oct. 13, Tech will host Michigan Day. The event will feature a panel with Scripps and Peretick and Myers. Researchers from Michigan Tech, the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses, Michigan State University and Wayne State University will give talks to those in attendance as well.
Ten said Michigan Day invites people from all across the state to coalesce and talk about energy while they are up here for NAPS. "We actually mobilize people coming from downstate, because we thought since we host this in Houghton, we want to make sure that we utilize the connections of what we have from the State of Michigan, to do something more," he said. "All these colleagues in the power area are very excited and they're going to drive over here to do these two things in one single trip."
