Get a head start
Seed workshop Wednesday
HOUGHTON — Gardeners looking to get an early start on the growing season are invited to a hands-on gardening workshop on from 5:30 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Carnegie Museum in Houghton. The class will focus on growing tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant in the Upper Peninsula’s short growing season. No prior gardening experience is necessary.
Participants will learn how to start seeds indoors and care for seedlings until they are ready to be planted outside. The workshop will include guided, hands-on instruction, and each participant will go home with the plants they start during the class.
The session is the first in a six-part gardening workshop series organized by Pewabic Street Community Garden (PSCG) and supported by a grant from the Keweenaw Community Foundation. The series is designed to help local gardeners build the skills needed to grow food successfully in the challenging climate of Houghton and Keweenaw counties.
Additional workshops will take place on April 15, May 13, June 3, June 24, and July 22 at the Carnegie Museum in Houghton and at PSCG. Future topics will include propagating herbs and flowers, growing squash and cucumbers, building raised beds, pruning tomatoes, and growing and storing onions and garlic.
Each class runs from 5:30-8:00 p.m. and costs $40, with all supplies included. Participants may attend just one workshop or return for additional classes throughout the series. Class size is limited to 16 people to ensure a hands-on experience.
