HOUGHTON - Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, but many cases can be prevented through education, lifestyle changes, and early intervention. Kristi Wegener, MD, Family Medicine Physician will help community members better understand their heart health during an upcoming Talk With A Doc event hosted by Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital & Clinics.

The presentation, Understanding Your Risk of Heart Disease, will provide practical information about how heart disease develops, the factors that contribute to cardiovascular risk, and the steps individuals can take to improve their long-term health. The event is designed to help attendees better understand their personal risk and empower them to make informed decisions about prevention and treatment. The event will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Aspirus Houghton Clinic, 1000 Cedar Street, Houghton. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Talk With A Doc series brings local medical expertise directly to the community, offering attendees the opportunity to learn from providers, ask questions, and gain practical insights into important health topics.

"Many of the factors that contribute to heart disease can be identified early, giving individuals an opportunity to make changes that support long-term heart health," said Dr. Kristi Wegener. "Understanding your risk factors, including family history, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes, and lifestyle habits, can help you take action early and reduce your chances of developing serious heart problems."

During the session, attendees will learn about:

• What heart disease is and how it develops

• Common risk factors for heart disease

• How to understand personal risk for heart disease

• Strategies for preventing heart disease and reducing modifiable risk factors

• The importance of routine screenings and preventive care

•Lifestyle changes that support long-term heart health

"While some risk factors such as age and family history cannot be changed, many others can be managed through healthy choices and regular medical care," Dr. Wegener said, "My goal is to help people understand the steps they can take now to protect their hearts and improve their overall quality of life for years to come."
