Starting the school year strong

Angel Mission's backpack program

CALUMET — As back-to-school season approaches, many families in the Copper Country are feeling the pressure of rising school supply costs–what once was a quick $20 trip to the store has become a shopping list that can top $100 per child. From inflation to expanded supply lists and tech gear, it’s harder than ever for some parents to afford even the basics. That’s where our community can make a big difference.

The Copper Country Angel Mission (CCAM) is once again launching its annual Backpack Program–a local initiative to provide fully stocked backpacks to students in need throughout our area. According to a CCAM press release, these backpacks are filled with essential supplies that every student needs to start the school year with confidence.

With school budgets tighter than ever, more and more classroom costs are shifting to parents. It’s not just about folders and crayons anymore–students are often asked to bring items such as cleaning supplies and tissues, and not every family can keep up. That’s why community donations are critical. Whether you’re an individual, a business owner, or part of a local organization, your donation can help lighten the load for a struggling family.

All contributions directly support the purchase of school supplies or filling backpacks. You can donate school supplies directly at Houghton Walmart, at local churches, or drop off items at the Hancock Salvation Army and Copper Country Angel Mission. Monetary donations are also welcome and will be used to fill any gaps in essential items.

Last Year, Angel Mission distributed mored then 200 backpacks, and the they expect an increase this year due to tightening budgets. Families who are interested in receiving backpacks for their children can find the registration form on the CCAM website or fill one out at the Salvation Army or CCAM at 433 Fifth St. in Calumet.

Starting at $3.50/week.
