WINDSOR, ONT. -- The two-lane pedestrian path on the Gordie Howe International Bridge is now open, allowing walkers, runners and cyclists to walk to and from Canada.

The bridge officially opened on July 27 following tense negotiations after President Donald Trump imposed additional tariffs on Canadian goods, delaying the opening.

As the path opens, officials encourage pedestrians to consider crossing later in the summer to avoid congestion. For the first few days, access on the bridge will be limited and pedestrians will be able to cross on a first come, first serve basis.

How do I get to the multi-use path?

Pedestrians and cyclists using the multi-use path from Detroit will access the bridge via a separate entry point at6366 W. Jefferson Ave. There isn't a parking lot at either port of entry. Parking in Detroit is available at Clark Park trailhead.

How big is the multi-use path?

The path is about 12 feet wide to accommodate two-way traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians share one lane.

How long is the bridge?

The bridge is about 1.5 miles long, but from the path's entrance to exit, it's about 1.8 miles. There's a slight incline. At its highest point, the bridge is 150 feet above the Detroit River. It will take cyclists about 20 minutes to cross and pedestrians about 45 minutes to cross, according to the bridge authority.

Do I still need to carry my passport?

Pedestrians will need to carry their enhanced license, passport or any other acceptable form of identification to go through border inspection, which is separate from the inspection vehicles go through. Pedestrians do not have to pay any tolls.

Are pets allowed on the bridge?

Pets are not allowed on the pedestrian path but service animals that are properly identified are allowed on the path. Owners are responsible for cleaning after their pet.

Is the path wheelchair-accessible?

Motorized wheelchairs, mobility scooters and similar devices are permitted on the bridge. However, electric scooters, skateboards or roller skates are not allowed on the pedestrian path.

How long is the bridge open?

The pedestrian path is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April 1 through Oct. 31 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Nov. 1 through March 31. Access to the path will close an hour early so pedestrians can cross within hours of operation.

The bridge is open 24 hours every day for vehicles.
