ZEBA — Team Henry’s Hookers took home the grand prize at Saturday’s 2nd Annual Women’s Fishing Tournament, hosted by Whirl-I-Gig banquet hall. Each of the 18 teams consisted of two to four women in a single boat, with a man allowed as captain. The categories were a total weight of five fish and largest single fish.
Henry’s Hookers launched from Witz’s Marina in Skanee, and brought back a total of 34.6 pounds, winning a $650 cash prize.
“We have a good skipper,” Carol McCutcheon of Baraga said about their team’s captain, John Hendrickson from Baraga. Along with McCutcheon, the other team members were Sabringa Snyder of L’Anse and Lauren Snyder from Hurley, Wisconsin. They bobbed with a gebbu rather than trolling.
McCutcheon won biggest fish last year, but this year was beat by Doreen Weaver, from Champion, who caught an 11.95 pound salmon with the Lady Rod Hogs, who took second place overall. Cathy Schjoth of Elo and Anita Taisto of Herman joined Weaver on Captain Jim Ballor’s boat. They launched from the Baraga Municipal Marina and caught a total of 29 pounds, earning a $450 second-place prize.
The Keweenaw Bay was mostly calm through the day, with a little chill in the morning air, according to Taisto.
“It was wonderful,” she said.
The tournament was previously hosted by the Eagles before they closed down. Prize money came from the $30 per person entry fee. Donated raffle prizes and a potluck dinner followed the weigh-in.
