KBIC primaries nearing: Vote for Tribal Council, Chief Judge seats Nov. 3

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) primary election for Tribal Council seats and Chief Judge is Nov. 3. Four seats on the Tribal Council are up for reelection in December.

Voter registration, open to KBIC members, is currently closed for the primary.

“It will open up on the fifth,” said KBIC election board chair Diana Chaudier.

It will close again on Nov. 15 for the general election on Dec. 15. Absentee voting is closed for the primary but can still be requested for the general election until Nov. 21, according to Chaudier.

The KBIC is split into two districts for Tribal Council seats, Baraga and L’Anse. Baraga district’s polling place is the Ojibwa Senior Citizen Center on Main Street. L’Anse districts voting place is the Zeba Community Hall on Zeba Road.

Two seats, which have three-year terms, are open in each district. The 4 top candidates from each district will move on to the general election. The top two candidates for Chief Judge will move on to the general election. Both districts vote on the same candidates for Chief Judge.

The Baraga district candidates are Elizabeth “Beth” Connor, Marty Curtis, Jr., James “J.D.” Denomie, Sue Ellen “Suzie” Elmblad, Gerald H. Friisvall, Kim Klopstein, Michael P. Lahti, Jerry Magnant (Mayo), Don Messer, Jr., and the incumbent Warren “Chris” Swartz, Jr..

The L’Anse district candidates are Lyndon Ekdahl, Floyd J. Forcia, Jr., Dale F. Goodreau, David Haataja, Jean (Halverson) Jokinen, incumbent Susan J. Lafernier, incumbent Jennifer Misegan and Chris C. Voakes.

The Chief Judge candidates are incumbent Bradley T. Dakota, Bill Jondreau and Paul D. Smith.
