Ontonagon announces Hometown Christmas winners

(Skip Schulz/For the Gazette) The White Family took first in the Open Category in the Ontonagon Hometown Christmas Parade on Sunday night.

Volunteer committee members agreed that the 19th Annual Ontonagon Hometown Christmas this past weekend was another success. Temps in the 30’s and the mid-November snowstorm provided the Christmas atmosphere.

“The Hometown Christmas committee would like to thank the community for making 2019 a successful year,” remarked Annette Trail, Hometown Christmas committee member. “Without your support in attending fundraisers, donating time, food, supplies, sponsoring event, as well as monetary donations, this event would not be possible.

One of the many events that was a part of the Hometown Christmas was the Christmas Decorating Contest. The contest was for both residences and businesses. In the residential portion of the contest, there was both Traditional and Griswold themes.

Chuck and Wendy Peterson took first in the Residential Traditional, with Tony Vezzetti winning the Residential Griswold.

For the business portion of the contest, there was an Inside and an Outside Category.

Strong Dental won the Inside category, while Ontonagon Mercantile won the Outside category.

Capping off the four-day festival was the parade down River Street and meeting Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus at the Ontonagon Fire Hall.

The Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park Department of Natural Resources Staff took first place in the Commercial category with their float in the parade. Winning the ‘Open’ division was the White family, and Ontonagon’s entrant in this past year’s U.P. Rodeo, Jenna Joliff, took first in the Youth category, with the Ontonagon School Band taking second.

Trail thanked the community for their support of this year’s Hometown Christmas.

“There is a committee of five planning but it is the community of 100’s of people that help make this possible. We are very appreciative for each and every one of you,” she said.

Committee members asked for the community to continue to support the Hometown Christmas and stated, “we are looking forward Hometown Christmas 2020.”
