State Rep. Greg Markkanen has been appointed by Speaker Lee Chatfield to serve on the House Local Government and Municipal Finance Committee in 2020.

The committee typically handles municipal government issues related to budgeting, financial liabilities, zoning, local authority, public safety and planning. Markkanen, of Hancock, said his previous experience serving on the Hancock City Council will help him serve the people of the Upper Peninsula well in his new role.

“My time on the Hancock City Council gave me a great understanding of the issues our local governments face on a daily basis,” Markkanen said. “I look forward to taking part in our efforts to address all of the mandates and burdensome rules that affect our local communities.”

Markkanen, a veteran who taught high school social studies until he began serving as a state representative in 2019, also continues to serve as the majority vice chair on the Insurance Committee and as a member of the Education; Energy; and Military, Veterans and Homeland Security committees.
