The Houghton Middle School Drama Club presents four scary stories

In “Welcome to the Haunted House” several students take shelter in an old mansion after their teacher’s car breaks down on a field trip. After the teacher goes to find help the students tell the stories they wrote for a Halloween writing project. Each story is acted out on stage until the teacher returns with some surprising help.

“Midnight Wax” tells the story of a reporter who agrees to spend the night alone in a wax museum. The museum is faced with stiff competition from newer museums and the owner is hopeful that the story the reporter will write about her experience will bring in more customers. The reporter, though, has actually been hired by someone who wants to buy the property the museum is built on and her plan is to write a bad review instead. The night, however, brings about a result neither she nor the owner could have imagined.

A family is presented with a chance to have their wishes come true in “The Monkey’s Paw”. An old family friend visits and tells them the story of a magic monkey’s paw that came into his possession. The paw grants its owner three wishes. After warning them that the wishes don’t always come true without consequences he leaves the paw with them, refusing to tell them how his wishes turned out. The story is a cautionary tale of the old adage “be careful what you wish for”.

“The Cabin” is an original play written by Director David Crowley. A young man staying in a cabin in a remote area of Colorado is visited by the local sheriff. The sheriff tells him that the people who live down the road have complained about him shooting his gun during the night. As the young man tries to explain the reason for his nightly shooting an argument erupts and the sheriff is accidentally shot and killed. He hides the body in the bedroom but as several other visitors arrive one by one he is driven to the edge of madness in his attempt to hide the truth. After falling asleep in exhaustion he awakes to a situation he never could have imagined. Has he learned the awful truth too late?

Performances of the four one act plays are Feb. 14 & 15 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Houghton High School Auditorium. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors.
