Levanen Places 3rd in LAND contest
Levanen
Gogebic Community College student, Audrey Levanen, of Hancock, was selected to represent GCC in this year’s Liberal Arts Network for Development (LAND) creative writing contest. Levanen placed third in the Poetry category for her poem titled, “Judy.” Entries were submitted from two-year colleges throughout Michigan. Comments from the judges include: reflective and sentimental in tone, great sense of memory in the present, great use of time and space, in “the moment.” The link to Levanen’s poem will be posted on the LAND conference website. https://landconferencemi.com/creative-writing-competition/.
LAND seeks to develop and promote a network for strengthening the liberal arts in Michigan community colleges. According to the LAND website, “the goal is to be a forum and a network for the development of the liberal arts in all of its many aspects.” Its activities are geared toward both instructors and students. The objectives for LAND include: explore the values and relevance of the liberal arts to colleges and communities, unify and integrate the liberal arts with the curriculum, identify and work toward improving liberal arts instruction, plan for the immediate, short-term, and future needs of liberal arts education and instruction, meet on a regular basis to work toward achieving the above objectives.
