HOUGHTON — Fun was had on both sides of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge Saturday as Houghton and Hancock celebrated a Community Night Out.
The event featured arts and live music on the Houghton municipal deck and a concert at Porvoo Park in Hancock, capped by a light-up boat parade and fireworks display at dusk.
Coming at the end of a summer with no Bridgefest and constant bridge construction, it’s a great way to finish with a celebration, said Deb Mann, chair of the Hancock Recreation Committee.
“It’s been a busy summer with all the activities going on on both sides,” she said. “I think it’s fabulous. And I think we’re very lucky that we have such talent close by. We don’t have to recruit a band from Milwaukee or Lansing or whatever. We have our own local talent.”
At Porvoo Park, Rewind kept the crowd happy with covers of Creedence Clearwater Revival and Rod Stewart.
The band lived up to Rose Hosey Cote and Michael Cote’s expectations. They were sitting at a picnic table listening to the music. They planned to come back later and catch the fireworks.
“It’s great,” Michael said. “I think they kind of felt bad that Bridgefest didn’t happen, so they did this for us.”
“And everyone’s been stuck inside,” Rose said. “It’s time to get them out.”
At the Houghton parking deck, people could browse a number of vendors, including Debbie Korby of Calumet, who sold handmade items including Upper Peninsulas and jewelry boxes.
The U.P.s take a day of work, plus another two to three days to let the resin dry, Korby said.
Saturday had been good so far, she said.
“I’ve sold a lot, so I’m happy,” she said.
Before the fireworks, boats lined up at the Super 8 in Houghton, decked out in Halloween decorations, Lambeau Field or as a sea dragon.
Gary and Debbie Weber of Laurium listened to music and watched the fireworks from a spot along the docks near the Ramada Inn.
“We certainly enjoyed this,” Debbie said. “I’m glad we came and found a spot.”
“It was a lovely evening,” Gary said.
