Friends of the Michigan Tech Library annual meeting and lecture

HOUGHTON — The Friends of the Michigan Tech Library will hold its Annual Meeting via Zoom on Oct. 21, featuring Faith Morrison speaking on her book “Uncertainty Analysis for Engineers and Scientists (Cambridge University Press, 2021).” Morrison will discuss the inherent levels of uncertainty in STEM work pitched for a general audience, and will also speak to the public understanding of STEM work in our world.

When scientists and engineers use data to perform tests and modeling, there is inherent uncertainty built in at numerous levels. Morrison shows how to build the skills for determining appropriate error limits for quantities that matter. This ranges from understanding how to handle a complete project to how uncertainty enters into various steps. It is often a challenge to determine error limits on measured or even estimated quantities that arise from numerous sources of uncertainty. While her book provides both general and technical methods for working through these challenges of uncertainty, this talk will offer insights on how the uncertainty affects the world of STEM and in turn, our society.
