COVID to blame for 3 new deaths in Houghton

HOUGHTON — State data Tuesday showed Houghton County since July 26 has recorded three more deaths blamed on COVID-19, along with 75 new confirmed coronavirus positives.

In the same seven-day span, Baraga County had nine confirmed cases and Keweenaw County five, both a decline from the previous week.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday added 442 confirmed positives since July 26 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 111 in Marquette County; 75 in Houghton County; 35 in Gogebic County; 42 in Dickinson County; 27 in Delta, Menominee and Iron counties; 25 in Ontonagon County; 14 in Chippewa County; 12 in Luce and Alger counties; 11 in Schoolcraft County; 10 in Mackinac County; nine in Baraga County; and five in Keweenaw County.

The state listed seven new virus-related deaths in the U.P. since July 26: the three in Houghton County and one each in Marquette, Menominee, Gogebic and Chippewa counties. Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 56,883 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 881 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 533 confirmed cases and 60 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 708 confirmed cases and 847 probable, 14 confirmed deaths and two probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,011 confirmed, 116 probable and 37 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,152 confirmed, 741 probable and eight deaths, seven probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,165 confirmed cases and 771 probable, 13 deaths and three probable;  Mackinac County, 1,782 confirmed cases and 914 probable, 28 deaths and three probable; Baraga County, 1,894 confirmed cases, 368 probable and 53 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,580 confirmed cases and 361 probable, 71 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,143 confirmed cases and 585 probable, 42 deaths and 30 probable; Chippewa County, 3,791 confirmed cases and 5,498 probable, and 90 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 4,260 confirmed cases, 1,867 probable and 62 deaths, 12 probable; Dickinson County, 5,418 confirmed cases and 2,629 probable, 92 deaths and 23 probable; Houghton County, 7,497 confirmed cases, 1,170 probable, 91 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,406 confirmed cases and 2,485 probable, 137 deaths and 27 probable; and Marquette County, 13,543 confirmed cases, 3,551 probable and 131 deaths, 11 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Tuesday had 20,173 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since July 26, or an average of about 2,882 cases per day for the week, for a total of 2,692,485 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that time period added 106 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 37,534.
