Assault victim dies from injuries; Houghton man charged with murder

HOUGHTON — A 24-year-old L’Anse man assaulted in Houghton Sept. 1 has since died from his injuries.
The Houghton Police Department announced the man’s death in a press release Wednesday morning. The attack took place early Sept. 1 at the Arbor Green apartments in Houghton. The victim’s name has yet to be released.
His alleged assailant, Luke Kreider, 19, of Houghton, had been charged Friday with assault/intent to murder. Following the victim’s death, the Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office amended the charge to homicide-open murder. The open murder charge could eventually result in a conviction for either first- or second-degree murder.
If convicted, Kreider could be sentenced to up to life in prison.
The investigation is ongoing. No further information is being released pending the continued investigation.
Kreider is lodged at the Houghton County Jail with no bond. His probable cause hearing was set for 10 a.m. Sept. 21, followed by his preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. Sept. 26.
