Fire destroys structure near Horseshoe Harbor
GRANT TOWNSHIP — Deputies from the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office responded Monday at approximately 2:47 p.m. to a report of a large smoke plume in the vicinity of Horseshoe Harbor. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the plume was from a structure fire.
Undersheriff Tonya Stefonich said when deputies arrived, the structure, which was used year-round, was totally engulfed, along with nearby woods and a vehicle parked on the property.
The smoke was seen by a resident of Copper Harbor whose family owns the property. Upon seeing it, the owner called a relative who then went to check on the property and found it engulfed.
A release from the Sheriff’s Office stated that Copper Harbor and Lac LaBelle Fire Departments, with assistance from the DNR Fire Division, worked diligently to keep the forest fire contained in a relatively small area. The structure is a total loss.
The fire is suspected of igniting between 11:45 a.m. and 2:47 p.m.
The cause of the fire is unknown and the case is under investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 906-337-0528.
