Houghton County COVID-19 update

HOUGHTON — Houghton County saw double the number of new confirmed COVID-19 positives from the previous week, while Keweenaw County recorded another death blamed on the coronavirus, according to state data Tuesday.

Houghton County had 37 confirmed positives since Sept. 13, up from 18 a week earlier.  Keweenaw County reported five new confirmed cases and Baraga County two for the week.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday added 221 confirmed positives since Sept. 13 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 39 in Marquette County; the 37 in Houghton County; 32 in Delta County; 26 in Dickinson County; 19 in Iron County; 16 in Chippewa County; 13 in Menominee County; nine in Gogebic County; seven in Schoolcraft County; five in Keweenaw, Ontonagon and Mackinac counties; four in Alger County; and two in Baraga and Luce counties.

New virus-related deaths in the Upper Peninsula for the week included two in Iron County and one in  Keweenaw, Marquette, Delta and Mackinac counties.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 59,284 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 906 deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 559 confirmed cases and 63 probable, and 13 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 749 confirmed cases and 861 probable, 14 confirmed deaths and two probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,083 confirmed, 125 probable and 40 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,204 confirmed, 791 probable and eight deaths, seven probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,250 confirmed cases and 794 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,863 confirmed cases and 956 probable, 30 deaths and four probable; Baraga County, 1,950 confirmed cases, 400 probable and 55 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,891 confirmed cases and 387 probable, 74 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,244 confirmed cases and 606 probable, 43 deaths and 31 probable; Chippewa County, 3,949 confirmed cases and 5,730 probable, and 91 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 4,431 confirmed cases, 1,989 probable and 62 deaths, 12 probable; Dickinson County, 5,737 confirmed cases and 2,865 probable, 94 deaths and 23 probable; Houghton County, 7,777 confirmed cases, 1,202 probable, 92 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,605 confirmed cases and 2,762 probable, 139 deaths and 27 probable; and Marquette County, 13,992 confirmed cases, 3,763 probable and 137 deaths, 14 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Tuesday had 16,901 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Sept. 13, or an average of about 2,414 cases per day for the week, for a total of 2,821,489 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that time period added 147 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 38,464.
