BARAGA -- Two people were arrested for suspected involvement in drug trafficking as part of an Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) investigation Thursday.

UPSET arrested a 22-year-old Baraga woman and a 40-year-old Milwaukee man for possession of cocaine after a traffic stop by the Michigan State Police Hometown Security Team near Covington. In the four-month investigation, detectives had received information they had been bringing large quantities of fentanyl to Baraga County, UPSET said in a release Friday.

After determining the suspects were traveling back from Milwaukee Thursday, detectives set up surveillance and found the vehicle on U.S. 41. An exterior search by MSP's K-9 unit indicated illegal drugs were in the vehicle, UPSET said. Troopers found a small amount of cocaine while searching the vehicle and 20 grams of fentanyl on the Baraga woman, who was a passenger in the car, UPSET said.

The Baraga County prosecutor's office is reviewing the case. The possession charge carries a possible four-year sentence. Additional charges, including the 20-year felony of possession with intent to deliver fentanyl, are expected, UPSET said.

The suspects' names will not be released until their arraignment in 97th District Court.

UPSET was assisted by MSP-Hometown Security Team, MSP-Calumet Post, KBIC Tribal Police, Baraga County Sheriff and Dynamite Towing.
