Man pleads to manslaughter in mother’s shooting death

HOUGHTON — The Hancock man accused of killing his mother in January pleaded no contest to manslaughter in Houghton County Circuit Court Friday.

Isaiah Strieter, 19, could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison. He faced two other felony charges which were dismissed in a plea agreement: homicide – open murder, punishable by up to life in prison, and possessing a firearm while committing a felony, a two-year felony.

Strieter allegedly shot Ashlee Harvey, 38, with a 9-millimeter pistol at a home on Quincy Street in Franklin Township in January. Officers found Harvey’s body at the site after responding to reports of gunfire. Strieter was arrested hours later.

Strieter underwent a forensic examination to determine competency to stand trial and criminal responsibility after a court order in February. His case resumed in district court in August.
