Murder suspect waives prelim

Hancock teen heading to court in mother’s shooting

HOUGHTON — The case of a Hancock man accused of murdering his mother in January has been bound over to Houghton County Circuit Court.

Isaiah Strieter, 19, waived his preliminary examination during an appearance by Zoom in 97th District Court Friday.

Strieter allegedly shot Ashlee Harvey, 38, with a 9-millimeter pistol at a home on Quincy Street in Franklin Township in January. Officers found Harvey’s body at the scene after responding to reports of gunfire. Strieter was arrested hours later.

Strieter underwent forensic examination for competency and criminal responsibility after the court granted a defense motion in February. The court scheduled a preliminary examination after a hearing in August.

Strieter is charged with open homicide, a felony punishable by life in prison, and possessing a firearm while committing a felony, a two-year felony. He is being held without bond.

A circuit court arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday.
