Police arrest suspect in string of larcenies

HOUGHTON — Houghton police have arrested a Houghton man they believe to be responsible for a string of larcenies from local cars and a laundromat.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday morning, Houghton officers responded to a sighting of a person going through vehicles in the parking lot of a local business. Arriving at the scene, police found and arrested a 40-year-old Houghton man.

He was lodged at the Houghton County Jail on a probation violation. After obtaining a search warrant, police found several items that had been reported stolen.

Houghton police had been getting complaints of the larcenies from vehicles and the Gateway Laundromat going back to Sept. 20. Investigation determined there had been numerous break-ins and miscellaneous thefts from vehicles downtown. More break-ins may have occurred but not been reported, police said.

Police will seek larceny charges for the suspect. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Houghton police at (906) 482-2121 or policedepartment@cityofhoughton.com.
