Covid-19 Update week of 10-31

HOUGHTON — While Houghton County led the area in new confirmed COVID-19 positives in the past week, its case numbers dropped for the seven-day period while virus activity held steady in Baraga and Keweenaw counties, according to state data posted Tuesday.

Houghton County had 20 confirmed positives since Oct. 25, 19 fewer cases than a week earlier. Baraga County reported 12 new confirmed cases, up three from a week ago, and Keweenaw County had three new cases, only one more for the seven-day period.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday added 194 confirmed positives since Oct. 25 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 27 in Dickinson County, 24 in Marquette and Gogebic counties, 20 in Houghton County, 19 in Menominee County, 18 in Delta County, 14 in Iron County, 12 in Baraga County, 10 in Chippewa County, seven in Ontonagon County, six in Alger and Mackinac counties, three in Schoolcraft and Keweenaw counties and one in Luce County.

The state recorded more one more virus-related death for the week in Delta and Chippewa counties, while Menominee County’s count was reduced by one.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 60,593 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 929 deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 571 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 14 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 759 confirmed cases and 868 probable, 15 confirmed deaths and three probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,120 confirmed, 129 probable and 40 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,236 confirmed, 807 probable and eight deaths, nine probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,285 confirmed cases and 809 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,913 confirmed cases and 965 probable, 32 deaths and four probable; Baraga County, 2,003 confirmed cases, 430 probable and 56 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,965 confirmed cases and 393 probable, 81 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,380 confirmed cases and 622 probable, 43 deaths and 31 probable; Chippewa County, 4,040 confirmed cases and 5,892 probable, and 94 deaths, 18 probable; Menominee County, 4,543 confirmed cases, 2,086 probable and 64 deaths, 13 probable; Dickinson County, 5,836 confirmed cases and 2,942 probable, 95 deaths and 24 probable; Houghton County, 7,944 confirmed cases, 1,221 probable, 92 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,755 confirmed cases and 3,017 probable, 140 deaths and 28 probable; and Marquette County, 14,243 confirmed cases, 3,903 probable and 141 deaths, 16 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Tuesday had 11,651 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Oct. 25, or an average of about 1,664 cases per day for the week, for a total of 2,897,827 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that time period added 156 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 39,406.
