Sheriff: Remains not those of local missing woman
HOUGHTON — Preliminary results show the remains of an unknown woman found in Wisconsin last week are not those of a missing Houghton County woman, Houghton County Sheriff Josh Saaranen announced Wednesday.
Forensic mental and dental professionals determined the remains did not match Leah Harding, who has been missing since 2015. Houghton County provided its investigative records, including dental records, to the investigative team in Florence County and in Michigan’s Dickinson County.
A hunter found the remains of an adult female in a rural wooded area in Florence County Friday morning. There had been no sign the remains matched a person in the Florence area, the Wisconsin Department of Justice said.
There had been belief that the remains might be those of Harding, Saaranen said. Harding was last seen April 30, 2015, at the BP gas station in Baraga.
Harding’s boyfriend, Camiel VanHaecke, was named as a person of interest in the case, but has not been charged.
