Tech-NMU hockey game to determine winner among area publishers

MARQUETTE – A friendly bet between The Mining Journal and the Houghton Daily Mining Gazette publishers are raising the stakes for this Friday’s Northern Michigan University vs. Michigan Tech University hockey game.

Ann Troutman of The Mining Journal and Candace Wolf of the Daily Mining Gazette will be keenly watching the score of Friday’s game, as the loser will spend the next week wearing the other team’s jersey. If NMU wins, Wolf will be wearing a Wildcats jersey and if Tech wins, Troutman will spend the next week wearing the black and gold of the Huskies.

“I’m a fan of hockey, I’ve always been a fan of hockey,” Wolf said. “I’ll be proudly wearing the black and gold Huskies jersey. Wildcats versus Huskies, fighting like cats and dogs.”

Wolf took over as the publisher and editor of Houghton’s Daily Mining Gazette earlier this year.

“This is a great learning experience for me,” Wolf said. “Ann and I are two of a kind.”

The two are the only female Ogden News publishers in the Upper Peninsula.

“Dogs and cats have been going at it forever,” Troutman said. “I always say that Marquette is the jewel of the Upper Peninsula, so we already know what’s going to happen. Go ‘Cats!”

Those planning to attend the game can use their excitement toward a good cause, with the 2022 Teddy Bear Toss taking place between the first and second periods of the game. The Teddy Bear Toss is an annual tradition that sees fans throw teddy bears and other stuffed animals onto the ice. Once collected, the toys will be donated to the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul to be distributed to families in need during the holiday season.

Friday’s game takes place in Marquette at the Berry Events Center, with puck drop at 7:07 p.m.
