Camper rescued from area woods

LAKE LINDEN — A camper was treated for hypothermia and transported to the hospital after being rescued from the woods by first responders near Lake Linden Monday.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department responded to the woods off of Gregory-Cemetery Road, where a 40-year-old woman was reported as needing help getting out.

She had been camping since early Friday afternoon several hundred yards off the road. She was reported as weak, dehydrated and unable to walk out.

The woman called a friend for help. The friend then called 911.

GPS coordinates from the woman’s phone were used to help locate her. The Bootjack Fire and Rescue Department assisted in the search.

A first responder snowshoed in and found the camper. She got a ride out from another first responder on a snowmobile who found an alternate route into the camping area.

Mercy EMS treated the woman for possible hypothermia. She was then transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium.

The sheriff’s department was also assisted by Superior Search and Rescue.
