Arraignment waived in criminal sexual conduct charge

HOUGHTON — A Houghton man scheduled to stand trial for murder this summer waived his arraignment for a separate criminal sexual conduct charge in Houghton County Circuit Court Monday.

Luke Kreider, 19, is accused of committing first-degree criminal sexual conduct against a woman in August. Kreider allegedly used force with a weapon, causing injury to the victim.

He was charged in the case in November. By that time, he was already in jail on charges of killing a L’Anse man in Houghton. He stood mute on those charges during his arraignment in Houghton County Circuit Court last week.

Kreider was added to the trial docket for July.

Kreider allegedly attacked Caleb Lynum, 24, of L’Anse early on the morning of Sept. 1 at the Arbor Green apartments in Houghton.

Kreider was originally charged with assault/intent to murder. The charge was amended to homicide-open murder when Lynum died after having been placed on life support.

The open murder charge could eventually result in a conviction for either first- or second-degree murder.
