Millages dominate May ballot

HOUGHTON — A mix of millages will go before Copper Country voters during the May 2 election.

The only county-wide millage is in Houghton County, which will vote on a renewal for road funding.

Other villages, townships and school districts have millages throughout Baraga, Houghton and Ontonagon counties.

• Houghton County

The county is seeking a 1.369 mill, 10-year millage renewal. It will pay the general operating and maintenance expenses of the Houghton County Road Commission and incorporated cities and villages within the county in maintaining roads, streets and highways. If renewed, it will produce an estimated $1,464,740.63 for 2024, the first year of the millage.

Calumet Township

The township is seeking a 1.5-mill, eight-year building and maintenance millage. The millage had been rolled back to 1.4766 mills through the Headlee Amendment, which reduces millages after property values increase to hold revenues constant. In its first year, it will raise an estimated $119,000.

Chassell Township

The township is seeking a five-year, 0.5-mill levy, which would fund the implementation, operation and maintenance of recreational projects and activities in the township’s recreation plan. It would raise an estimated $35,257 in 2024.

Chassell Township Schools

The district is seeking a 20-mill, 10-year operating millage. The actual amount levied is capped by the state at 18 mills. By setting the amount at 20, the district is able to restore millage lost through Headlee reductions; it will only be levied to the extent necessary to make up that reduction. It would raise an estimated $472,343 in 2024.

Duncan Township

The township is seeking a five-year, 0.8943-mill renewal of its operating millage. The expiring millage had been voted at 1 mill before being reduced to .8943 mills through a Headlee rollback. It would raise an estimated $13,478 in its first year.

The township is also seeking a five-year, 1.7889-mill renewal of millage for fire protection; purchasing and housing fire motor vehicles, apparatus and equipment; and for their building, maintenance and operation. The previously approved 2 mills was reduced to 1.7889 mills through a Headlee rollback. It would raise an estimated $26,961 in its first year.

A five-year, 0.9432-mill millage renewal would go towards the operation of Sonco and Bay ambulance companies. The expiring millage had been voted at 1 mill before being reduced through a Headlee rollback. It would raise an estimated $14,215 in its first year.

A five-year, 0.4715-mill renewal would go towards fire protection, purchasing, housing and maintaining fire trucks apparatus and fire hall updates, upgrades and operation. It would raise an estimated $7,106 in its first year.

Franklin Township

Precinct 1 voters will decide on the renewal of a four-year, 1-mill millage for the Quincy-Franklin Fire Department Fund. It would raise an estimated $34,150.32 in its first year.

Precinct 2 voters will decide on the renewal of a four-year, 1-mill millage for the Ripley Fire Department Fund. It would raise an estimated $12,064.90 in its first year.

The township is seeking an 0.25-mill increase for four years to purchase a fire truck and other firefighting apparatus for the township. It would raise an estimated $11,553.80 in its first year.

The township is seeking a four-year, 2-mill millage for improvements to public roads within the township. It would raise an estimated $92,430.43 in its first year.

Laurium

The village is seeking a Headlee override for its millage for general operating expenses. The 10-year millage would be restored to the original 12.5 mills, up from the rolled-back rate of 9.1058 mills. It would raise an estimated $85,000 in 2023.

Stanton Township

The village is seeking a five-year, 2-mill road millage renewal. It had been reduced to 1.9828 mills through a Headlee rollback. It would raise an estimated $134,702 in its first year.

Torch Lake Township

The village is seeking a five-year, 0.9715-mill renewal of its road improvement millage. It had been reduced from 1 mill through Headlee rollbacks. It would raise an estimated $107,793.65 in its first year.

• Baraga County

Spurr Township

The NICE Community School District is seeking a 10-year, 18.4146-mill renewal of its operating millage. The district would levy no more than 18 mills, the maximum allowed under state law. It would raise an estimated $2,324,840 in its first year.

The Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency is seeking a 1.5-mill increase over 20 years for its special education millage. It would raise an estimated $4,765,811 in its first year.

• Ontonagon County

Bohemia Township

Bohemia Township is seeking a six-year, 1-mill operating millage, replacing one that had expired. It would raise an estimated $8,998 in its first year.

Stannard Township

The township is seeking a new 1-mill, five-year millage for cemetery and park upkeep and maintenance. It would generate an estimated $25,381.79 in the first year.

The township is seeking a 1-mill, five-year millage to be used for operating and maintenance expenses for the Stannard Township Fire Department. It would replace the 1 mills that expired in 2021. It would raise an estimated $25,381.79 in its first year.
