COVID-19 update: week of April 10

COVID-19 activity generally declined across the region in the past week, according to state health data.

Houghton County had 11 new confirmed coronavirus positives since April 4, down eight from a week ago, while Baraga County had three new cases, only one more than the previous week, according to figures posted Tuesday on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website. Keweenaw County had no new cases, down one from a week earlier.

The state for the week recorded no confirmed virus-related deaths in the Upper Peninsula for the seven-day period.

The MDHHS website Tuesday added 121 confirmed COVID-19 positives since April 4, up nine from the previous week, even though four counties in the Upper Peninsula had no new cases. The numbers were 35 in Dickinson County, 30 in Marquette County, 12 in Delta County, 11 in Houghton County, nine in Menominee and Gogebic counties, four in Iron and Ontonagon counties, three in Baraga County, and two in Schoolcraft and Alger counties.

Based on the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 64,887 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 997 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 605 confirmed cases and 65 probable, and 15 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 790 confirmed cases and 892 probable, 17 confirmed deaths and eight probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,214 confirmed, 150 probable and 42 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,299 confirmed, 879 probable and nine deaths, 12 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,423 confirmed cases and 828 probable, 15 deaths and six probable; Mackinac County, 1,950 confirmed cases and 1,081 probable, 34 deaths and six probable; Baraga County, 2,176 confirmed cases, 463 probable and 60 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,226 confirmed cases and 431 probable, 85 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,671 confirmed cases and 738 probable, 44 deaths and 34 probable; Chippewa County, 4,264 confirmed cases and 6,082 probable, and 99 deaths, 21 probable; Menominee County, 5,020 confirmed cases, 2,253 probable and 69 deaths, 17 probable; Dickinson County, 6,394 confirmed cases and 3,147 probable, 108 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,420 confirmed cases, 1,285 probable, 96 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,214 confirmed cases and 3,427 probable, 155 deaths and 42 probable; and Marquette County, 15,221 confirmed cases, 4,540 probable and 149 deaths, 25 probable.

The MDHHS on Tuesday added 4,646 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since April 4, down 617 for the week, or an average of about 664 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 3,094,023 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since April 4 recorded 90 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus, 23 more than the week before, to reach 42,613.
