Floods flash through Lake Linden

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette Mud is seen piled along the roadway Wednesday after overnight flooding in Lake Linden.

HOUGHTON — A culvert failure on the hillside above Lake Linden led to flooding in part of the village Tuesday night.

In a Facebook post, the Lake Linden Volunteer Fire Department urged residents to use caution on Calumet Street (M-26) between Fourth and Sixth streets, and on side streets above and below that area.

The water flow left sediment over parts of the roadway, and possibly in the storm sewer and catch basins, said Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Dan Weingarten.

MDOT will inspect the drainage structures to see if they’ve been affected.

Lake Linden is also doing some street sweeping and cleaning of the roadway, Weingarten said.

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette Fifth Street in Lake Linden is seen closed off after flooding Tuesday night.

The bulk of the damage was done to residences along Saw and Poplar streets.

Residents on Saw Street were cleaning up Wednesday night. John Macdonald said he had been alerted to noise around 10:30 p.m., when a deluge of water came through his yard.

“It was a river,” he said.

No damage had been done to his house, but he would have to take a car into the shop due to mud getting into the transmission, Macdonald said.

“I was going to pull it out (last night), but when I stepped off the steps, the water was up to my knees,” he said. “…The way the water was flowing, I’d be down in the lake.”

Macdonald said some of the water that came down had been vented away from the state trail being rebuilt after the 2018 flood.

“They’ve got other issues too, because they’re trying to vent more water up there, so it’s being pushed this way,” he said. “There may be another one tonight happening.”

He was doing some fill work on his yard Wednesday, but said, “I’m going to rely on the people who made the mess.”

A message was left with the Department of Natural Resources seeking comment Wednesday.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Hubbell and Lake Linden areas around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, continuing until 9:45.

More snow melt flood warnings remained in effect Wednesday afternoon for frequently flooding areas including the Sturgeon River in the Alston and Chassell area, and Trap River Road near Lake Linden.

Starting at $3.50/week.
