NMU hosts conviction expungement clinic

Northern Michigan University will serve as a host site for a free criminal conviction expungement eligibility clinic offered through the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. The event is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, May 19, in 1318 Jamrich Hall. Not all criminal convictions are eligible for expungement under Michigan law, but individuals seeking to have theirs considered must pre-register by 5 p.m. Friday, May 12.

The clinic is limited to the first 75 registrants, who will have their criminal records reviewed and be advised of their eligibility and next steps by law students, faculty and volunteer attorneys.

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will obtain a copy of each individual’s Internet Criminal History Record (ICHAT) without charge. Those with more than three felony convictions are not eligible for expungement, though there may be exceptions if the felonies all occurred within 24 hours. A person may expunge unlimited eligible misdemeanors. Some traffic offenses are eligible for expungement under current Michigan law, including a first DUI conviction.
