Drowning accident fatal for Calumet child

MISERY BAY — A Calumet child was found dead after a drowning accident Friday afternoon in Ontonagon County.

Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a dispatch at 5:07 p.m. that Esko Carlson, 7, was feared to have drowned near the boat launch at Misery Bay, the department said in a release. The department set up incident command and began a search. Superior Search and Rescue found Carlson with the aid of volunteers and immediately began CPR.

Carlson was taken back to Incident Command, where Mercy EMS picked him up and transported him to UP Health — Portage, where he was pronounced dead.

Assisting in the search were Superior Search and Rescue, Baraga Search and Rescue, Gogebic Search and Rescue, Michigan State Police (Calumet) K-9, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Coast Guard, Houghton County Marine Patrol, Mercy EMS, numerous volunteers and Ontonagon County Victim Services.

Carlson’s name was released in an obituary sent out Sunday. He and his family moved to the area from South Dakota in January. He had attended Lake Linden-Hubbell Elementary School.

His funeral will take place 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church in Hancock. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery of Ahmeek.

Visitation is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church in Hancock and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
