Houghton Co. suspect back in custody after fleeing

HOUGHTON — A domestic violence suspect was in custody Saturday a day after fleeing police who responded to the scene.

Houghton County sheriff’s deputies had responded to a report of a domestic assault at 7 p.m. Friday night in Calumet. The suspect was identified as Jason Kramer, who was out on bond on other charges and had cut his GPS tether, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Deputies spotted Kramer driving southbound on U.S. 41 in Franklin Township and began pursuing him.

The vehicle chase ended when Kramer crashed his vehicle on Airport Park Road at the intersection of Hill Top Road. Kramer then fled the scene on foot, sparking an extensive search throughout the Dollar Bay area.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Houghton Police Department, Michigan Tech Public Safety and Superior Search and Rescue.

Kramer faces charges of aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding, bond violations and removing an electronic monitoring device connected with the incident.
