Marin enters guilty plea

HOUGHTON — A Hancock man arrested as part of a multi-agency child sex sting operation in July pleaded guilty to a reduced charge Tuesday.
Juan Marin, 47, pleaded guilty to attempting to accost a minor for immoral purposes, a two-year high-court misdemeanor, during a hearing in Houghton County Circuit Court.
Marin and other suspects arrested in the sting chatted online with undercover deputies posing as minors on apps meant to facilitate sexual encounters, according to police reports. After agreeing on a location to meet up for sex, they were arrested upon arrival.
In exchange for Marin’s guilty plea, four felony charges were dismissed. child sexually abusive activity, punishable by up to 20 years in prison; use of a computer to commit child sexually abusive activity, also punishable by up to 20 years in prison; accosting a child for immoral purposes, punishable by up to four years in prison; and using a computer to commit a crime, punishable by four to 10 years in prison.
Under the sentencing agreement, any jail time will be credit for time served. Marin must also register as a sex offender.
Marin’s sentencing will be in approximately 30 days. In advance of the sentencing, Marin’s bond was revoked.
Two cases connected to the sting operation are also proceeding.
Peter Hallesy, 38, of Kearsarge, is scheduled to appear in 97th District court for a sentencing and motion hearing Friday morning. Trenton Kyllonen, 36, of Lake Linden stood mute on his charges in September and was placed on the January trial docket in Houghton County Circuit Court.
