KBIC holds primary election

L’ANSE — Keweenaw Bay Indian Community members chose candidates for the general election ballot in Saturday’s primary.

The KBIC posted unofficial results on its Facebook page.

In the L’Anse District, incumbent Toni Minton led with 62 votes. She will be joined on the general election ballot by Sam Loonsfoot (49), Dale Goodreau (44) and Serene Gauthier (40). Not advancing to the December field were Jerry Jondreau (34), Gary Loonsfoot, Jr. (30) and Terri Swartz (Denomie) (22).

There was no primary for the Baraga District, where only four candidates are running.

Council members serve three-year terms, with a third of the 12-person council up for election every year.

In the associate judge race, Tashina Lee Emery (129) and Mark Smith (112) will face off in the general election. Also running was Paul Smith (50). Associate judges also serve a three-year term.

The general election will take place Dec. 16.
