Murder charges filed
Dixon accused in Houghton shooting
HOUGHTON — The suspect in a Shelden Avenue shooting death is scheduled to be arraigned in 97th District Court Friday morning, the state attorney general’s office said Thursday.
The attorney general’s office also identified Evan Dixon, 59, as the suspect in the case, and listed the charges expected to be brought against him: one count each of first-degree murder-premeditated and possessing a firearm during commission of a felony. The murder charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, while the felony firearm charge is punishable by up to two years.
The shooting occurred about 7 p.m. Monday night at the Douglass House Saloon in Houghton. Officers who responded to a report of gunshots found a 53-year-old man in the men’s bathroom. The victim’s identity has yet to be announced.
The state attorney’s general office is temporarily handling prosecution of serious felonies in Houghton County after the resignation of former Prosecutor Paul Labine in September. Dan Helmer, who was sworn in as Houghton County’s new prosecutor Tuesday morning, officially starts his duties Dec. 4.
