$300K grant for Point Abbaye

L’ANSE — Baraga County will be able to make additional improvements at Point Abbaye.
The county received a $300,000 grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund for the nature site, clerk Wendy Goodreau told the county board at its meeting Monday. The next phase will include additional trails, parking, campsites and a lean-to structure.
The county was one of 53 grant winners in the most recent round of funding announced by the state.
Commissioner Craig Kent congratulated Goodreau for her hard work in preparing the application.
The board also approved the purchase of new vehicle equipment for the sheriff’s department. The $10,145.42 bid from Elcom Systems in Marquette includes radio and radar installation, interior windshield lightbar, prisoner partition and other items.
Brad Dakota was unanimously reappointed as vice-chairman for a one-year term.
The board also decided on appointments to several area boards: the Western Upper Peninsula Planning & Development Region (Board Chair Gale Eilola and Commissioner Bill Menge); BHK Child Development (Menge), Western Upper Peninsula Health Department Board (Eilola, Dakota); U.P. Resource Conservation and Development Council (Eilola, Menge); U.P. State Fair Authority (Eilola); UPWARD Talent Council Board (Eilola). For county committees, Dakota and Kent were named to equalization, Menge and Dakota to finance and Eilola and Commissioner Chad Cichosz for personnel.
