L’ANSE — In a brief meeting Monday, the L’Anse Village Council approved a liquor license for an upcoming hockey tournament.

The Old Timers’ Winter Classic Hockey Tournament will be held Feb. 17-18 at Meadowbrook Arena.

“It’s pretty fun,” said Council President William Ervast. “It’s pretty good hockey, a bunch of old guys out there on the ice … it brings a lot of people into our community, so it’s a good boost for wintertime.”

Village Manager Bob LaFave said he had consulted the police department about the tournament, which they said hadn’t caused any problems last year.

The L’Anse Old-Timers and Baraga County Next Gen Team organize the tournament, now in its second year. Last year’s tournament raised more than $5,300, which went toward improvements at Meadowbrook and the Baraga Ice Rink, according to Next Gen’s Facebook page.

During department reports, Public Works Director Lyle Olsen said there had been water main leaks on Friday and Monday, both of which the department was able to fix.

Erin Sprenkle, lead operator of L’Anse’s wastewater plant, said the plant will be installing the samplers it recently received as part of the fourth phase of the village’s sewer project through Rural Development.

Starting at $3.50/week.
