Murder case delayed

Kempainen to undergo competency evaluation

HOUGHTON — A Wisconsin woman charged in the December shooting death of a Hancock Township man will undergo a competency evaluation.

Margaret Kempainen, 50, had been scheduled for a preliminary hearing in 97th District Court Friday. Her case is now scheduled for a review on March 22.

Kempainen is charged with first-degree murder in the death of a relative, Alvin Kempainen, 87. She also faces a count of conspiracy to commit murder. Both crimes carry a maximum punishment of life in prison.

Kempainen’s son, Jacob Kempainen, 20, was arraigned on the same charges, plus a count of felony firearm, a two-year felony. At his probable cause hearing last week, he was referred for a competency evaluation. His case is scheduled for review on March 8.

Margaret and Jacob both live in Hartland, Wisconsin. They were arrested in Iowa several days after the shooting and extradited back to Michigan.

Starting at $3.50/week.
