Applications now available

$115K expected to be distributed through 2024 Keweenaw Heritage Grant program

Sean Gohman, executive director of the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission, has announced in a Thursday release that Keweenaw Heritage Grant applications are now available.

The Keweenaw NHP Advisory Commission is offering Keweenaw Heritage Grant opportunities to owners and operators of historic properties and providers of history programs in support of projects that further the preservation and interpretation of the story of copper on the Keweenaw Peninsula.

At the January 9, 2024 quarterly meeting of the Advisory Commission, Gohman said that with the exception of date changes, the new applications are nearly identical to last year’s. The deadline for application submissions is 5 p.m., Friday, March 29; Board decisions will be made by May 7, and awards will be given out by May 31, 2024.

According to the application, the project completion date is Tuesday, December 31, 2024, and project reports are do on Friday, Feb. 2, 2025.

The minimum grant request is $1,000 and the maximum grant request is $15,000. At least $115,000 is expected to be available for the 2024 Keweenaw Heritage Grants program.

The grants, as in previous years, are subject to a 1-to-1 match, although up to 100% of the match may be in-kind. This year, applicants are asked to use an hourly rate of $25 when calculating the in-kind match. Grants will range between $1,000 and $15,000. Organizations may submit up to two applications, which must be prioritized when submitted; their highest priority grant application will receive greater consideration, although all applications will be evaluated. Projects will be selected for funding based on the information provided in the application and to ensure a balance of project types and locations.

For that reason, Gohman strongly advises applicants seek assistance from KNHP staff.

“It is strongly encouraged that your heritage site or property, if you’re eligible, to speak with National Park Service staff,” Gohman said.

Gohman said the application will be available on the park website. People can also email him with a request, and he will provide an application.

Applications may be submitted in person or by mail to park headquarters by close of business on Friday, March 29, 2024. Address applications to:

Keweenaw National Historical Park, Keweenaw Heritage Grants – 2024, 25970 Red Jacket Road, Calumet, MI 49913.
